Winthrop is a somewhat small town located in the state of Maine. With a population of 6,081 people and just one neighborhood, Winthrop is the 51st largest community in Maine.

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Winthrop is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Winthrop is a town of professionals, sales and office workers and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Winthrop who work in office and administrative support (14.29%), management occupations (11.30%) and teaching (9.11%).

In addition, Winthrop is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates". Urban sophisticates are educated, wealthy, executives and professionals, who have urbane tastes in books, food, and travel, whether they actually live in a big city, or choose to reside in a small town. Because of many things, Winthrop is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Winthrop really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Winthrop perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic nightlife, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Winthrop has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Winthrop has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Winthrop than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Winthrop may be for you.

Being a small town, Winthrop does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
