About Southport

Southport is a tiny coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Maine. With a population of 677 people and just one neighborhood, Southport is the 250th largest community in Maine. Southport has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.

Southport is a blue-collar town, with 37.6% of people working in blue-collar occupations, while the average in America is just 24.7%. Overall, Southport is a town of sales and office workers, construction workers and builders, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Southport who work in office and administrative support jobs (13.47%), management occupations (9.80%), and sales jobs (8.16%).

Also of interest is that Southport has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

A relatively large number of people in Southport telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 9.54% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Southport is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town's population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.

Seniors make up 35.45% of Southport's population, making it a popular place to retire. Because of the prominence of the retirement community, Southport is good place for those over 65 to settle, as they will find many opportunities for socializing, as well as having access to many services oriented toward seniors.

The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Southport are somewhat historic and bounded by the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.

Being a small town, Southport does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

The per capita income in Southport in 2000 was $33,481, which is wealthy relative to Maine and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $133,924 for a family of four.
