About South Bristol

South Bristol is a tiny coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Maine. With a population of 900 people and just one neighborhood, South Bristol is the 247th largest community in Maine. South Bristol has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, South Bristol is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, South Bristol is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in South Bristol who work in sales jobs (12.65%), teaching (9.55%), and office and administrative support jobs (8.11%).

You will also find that a lot of people in South Bristol work in agricultural jobs - much more than in the average community in America. This will be quite apparent if you drive around town, as much of the landscape is dedicated to farms.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 8.23% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

South Bristol is a major vacation destination. Much of the town's population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependant on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, South Bristol's population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.

The town is also nautical, which means that parts of South Bristol are somewhat historic and bounded by the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.

As is often the case in a small town, South Bristol doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
