Northeast Somerset is a tiny town located in the state of Maine. With a population of 332 people and just one neighborhood, Northeast Somerset is the 259th largest community in Maine.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Northeast Somerset is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Northeast Somerset is a town of sales and office workers, service providers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Northeast Somerset who work in management occupations (19.71%), office and administrative support jobs (18.98%), and food service (12.41%).
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 18.18% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Northeast Somerset is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town's population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.
Residents of the town have the good fortune of having one of the shortest daily commutes compared to the rest of the country. On average, they spend only 19.21 minutes getting to work every day.
As is often the case in a small town, Northeast Somerset doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The percentage of people in Northeast Somerset with college degrees is quite a bit lower than the national average for cities and towns of 14.96%: just 11.29% of people over 25 have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Northeast Somerset in 2000 was $14,520, which is lower middle income relative to Maine and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $58,080 for a family of four.
The people who call Northeast Somerset home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Northeast Somerset is White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Northeast Somerset include French, English, Irish, Italian, French Canadian, German, and Polish.
The most common language spoken in Northeast Somerset is English. Some people also speak French.
