St. Michaels is a very small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Maryland. With a population of 1,176 people and just one neighborhood, St. Michaels is the 276th largest community in Maryland.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, St. Michaels is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, St. Michaels is a town of sales and office workers, service providers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in St. Michaels who work in sales jobs (12.47%), office and administrative support jobs (9.05%), and food service (8.85%).
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 9.63% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
One of the nice things about St. Michaels is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
St. Michaels is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.
In terms of college education, St. Michaels is substantially better educated than the typical community in the nation, which has 14.96% of the adults holding a bachelor's degree or graduate degree: 28.44% of adults in St. Michaels have a college degree.
The per capita income in St. Michaels in 2000 was $28,131, which is upper middle income relative to Maryland, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $112,524 for a family of four.
St. Michaels is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call St. Michaels home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in St. Michaels is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in St. Michaels include English, German, Irish, and African.
The most common language spoken in St. Michaels is English. Some people also speak Spanish.
