Lake Shore is a somewhat small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Maryland. With a population of 13,137 people and two constituent neighborhoods, Lake Shore is the 99th largest community in Maryland.
Lake Shore is neither predominently blue-collar or white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Lake Shore is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Lake Shore who work in office and administrative support jobs (15.95%), management occupations (11.65%), and sales jobs (11.40%).
Also of interest is that Lake Shore has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
In addition, Lake Shore is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness.' But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.
Because of many things, Lake Shore is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Lake Shore a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Lake Shore has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Lake Shore's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.
The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Lake Shore are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities.
One downside of living in Lake Shore is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In Lake Shore, the average commute to work is 30.35 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average.
Residents of Lake Shore by-and-large get to work each day by driving: 98.7% use their own cars for their daily commute, making it a very car-oriented town. While Lake Shore may be a convenient place for driving around town, the negative aspect of this is that places that are suitable for walking or bicycling to and from work or stores may be few and far between. In general, car-oriented communities emphasize roads and convenience of driving, but not have a lot of walking-friendly areas to get from home to work, and tend not to have a lot of public transportation options.
Lake Shore is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.
In terms of college education, Lake Shore is somewhat better educated than the 14.96% who have a 4-year degree or higher in the typical US community: 20.76% of adults 25 and older in the town have at least a bachelor's degree.
The per capita income in Lake Shore in 2000 was $26,553, which is upper middle income relative to Maryland, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $106,212 for a family of four. However, Lake Shore contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
The people who call Lake Shore home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Lake Shore is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Lake Shore include German, English, Irish, Polish, and Italian.
The most common language spoken in Lake Shore is English.
