Lake Shore is a somewhat small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Maryland. With a population of 13,137 people and two constituent neighborhoods, Lake Shore is the 99th largest community in Maryland.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Lake Shore is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Lake Shore is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Lake Shore who work in office and administrative support jobs (15.95%), management occupations (11.65%), and sales jobs (11.40%).
Also of interest is that Lake Shore has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
In addition, Lake Shore is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates," which are people who are not only wealthy and employed in professional occupations, but highly educated to boot. Urban sophisticates have urbane tastes - whether they reside in a big or small city, a suburb, or a little town. Urban sophisticates support bookstores, quality clothing stores, enjoy luxury travel, and in big cities, they are truly the patrons of the arts, attending and supporting institutions such as opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre.
Because of many things, Lake Shore is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Lake Shore a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Lake Shore has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Lake Shore's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.
The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Lake Shore are somewhat historic and bounded by the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.
One downside of living in Lake Shore, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 30.35 minutes every day commuting to work.
Residents of Lake Shore by-and-large get to work each day by driving: 98.7% use their own cars for their daily commute, making it a very car-oriented town. While Lake Shore may be a convenient place for driving around town, the negative aspect of this is that places that are suitable for walking or bicycling to and from work or stores may be few and far between. In general, car-oriented communities emphasize roads and convenience of driving, but not have a lot of walking-friendly areas to get from home to work, and tend not to have a lot of public transportation options.
Being a small town, Lake Shore does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
In terms of college education, Lake Shore is somewhat better educated than the 14.96% who have a 4-year degree or higher in the typical US community: 20.76% of adults 25 and older in the town have at least a bachelor's degree.
The per capita income in Lake Shore in 2000 was $26,553, which is upper middle income relative to Maryland, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $106,212 for a family of four. However, Lake Shore contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
The people who call Lake Shore home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Lake Shore is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Lake Shore include German, English, Irish, Polish, and Italian.
The most common language spoken in Lake Shore is English.
