About Accokeek

Accokeek is a somewhat small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Maryland. With a population of 7,433 people and two constituent neighborhoods, Accokeek is the 150th largest community in Maryland.

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Accokeek is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Accokeek is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Accokeek who work in office and administrative support jobs (17.76%), management occupations (9.56%), and sales jobs (8.91%).

Also of interest is that Accokeek has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

There are many members of the armed forces living in Accokeek. You will notice when you visit or live here that some of the people you meet or see around town are employed by the armed services - even if they are not always in uniform.

In addition, Accokeek is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness.' But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.

Because of many things, Accokeek is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Accokeek really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Accokeek perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic night life, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live.

One of the nice things about Accokeek is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

In Accokeek, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 41.07 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average. One bright side is that local public transit is widely used, so it may be an option to avoid the headache of driving in the heavy traffic by leaving the car at home and taking transit.

Accokeek is a very car-oriented town. 96.71% of residents commute to work in a private automobile rather than by other means, such as public transit, bicycling, or walking. This is because Accokeek is a small town, and most people who live here have to drive out of town for work, and the town population is not large nor dense enough to support an extensive public transportation system. Accokeek has a lot of rural roads, and houses can be far apart. Many residents drive out of town for regular shopping trips as well.

In Accokeek, a lot of people use the bus to get to work every day even though Accokeek is a relatively small town. Those that ride the bus are primarily traveling out of town to good jobs in other cities.

Accokeek Information and Demographics

The education level of Accokeek citizens is substantially higher than the average US city or town, as 30.57% of adults in Accokeek have at least a bachelor's degree.

The per capita income in Accokeek in 2000 was $29,519, which is upper middle income relative to Maryland, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $118,076 for a family of four. However, Accokeek contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Accokeek is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Accokeek home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Accokeek is African-American, followed by White. Important ancestries of people in Accokeek include English, Irish, and German.

The most common language spoken in Accokeek is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Tagalog.
