Wellfleet is a very small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Massachusetts. With a population of 2,751 people and just one neighborhood, Wellfleet is the 292nd largest community in Massachusetts.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Wellfleet is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Wellfleet is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Wellfleet who work in office and administrative support jobs (12.89%), sales jobs (8.79%), and management occupations (8.20%).
Of important note, Wellfleet is also a town of artists. Wellfleet has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Wellfleet's character.
Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 8.36% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Wellfleet is a major vacation destination. Much of the town's population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependant on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Wellfleet's population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.
One of the nice things about Wellfleet is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
Wellfleet is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.
The citizens of Wellfleet are very well educated compared to the average community in the nation: 40.28% of adults in Wellfleet have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.
The per capita income in Wellfleet in 2000 was $25,712, which is middle income relative to Massachusetts, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $102,848 for a family of four.
The people who call Wellfleet home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Wellfleet is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Wellfleet include English, Irish, German, Portuguese, Italian, French, Swedish, Polish, Scottish, European, and Scotch-Irish.
The most common language spoken in Wellfleet is English.
