About Braithwaite

Braithwaite is a very small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Louisiana. With a population of 2,211 people and just one neighborhood, Braithwaite is the 194th largest community in Louisiana.

Unlike some towns , Braithwaite isn't mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Braithwaite are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Braithwaite is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Braithwaite who work in office and administrative support jobs (10.86%), sales jobs (8.43%), and healthcare (7.29%).

One of the nice things about Braithwaite is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

One downside of living in Braithwaite, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 35.55 minutes every day commuting to work. However, local public transit is widely used. For those who would prefer to avoid driving entirely and leave their car at home, it may be an option to use the transit instead.

Braithwaite is a very car-oriented town. 96.87% of residents commute to work in a private automobile rather than by other means, such as public transit, bicycling, or walking. This is because Braithwaite is a small town, and most people who live here have to drive out of town for work, and the town population is not large nor dense enough to support an extensive public transportation system. Braithwaite has a lot of rural roads, and houses can be far apart. Many residents drive out of town for regular shopping trips as well.

Despite the fact that it is a small town, Braithwaite has quite a few people who take public transportation - mostly a ferryboat - for their daily commute to work. This helps to fill a real need in the town for affordable transportation.

Braithwaite Information and Demographics

The percentage of adults in Braithwaite with college degrees is slightly lower than the national average of 14.96% for all communities. 12.30% of adults in Braithwaite have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.

The per capita income in Braithwaite in 2000 was $15,091, which is upper middle income relative to Louisiana, and lower middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $60,364 for a family of four.

Braithwaite is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Braithwaite home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Braithwaite is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Braithwaite include French, Italian, Irish, and German.

The most common language spoken in Braithwaite is English.
