Turon is a very small town located in the state of Kansas. With a population of 1,175 people and just one neighborhood, Turon is the 183rd largest community in Kansas. Turon has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Turon is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Turon is a town of managers, sales and office workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Turon who work in farm management (17.53%), office and administrative support jobs (12.34%), and sales jobs (7.51%).
Another important characteristic of Turon is that a lot of people work in agricultural jobs, especially compared to most other communities in America, and there are quite a number of farms in town.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 18.12% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Turon is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.
In terms of college education, Turon is nearly on par with the US average for all cities of 14.96%: 14.76% of adults 25 and older in Turon have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Turon in 2000 was $13,388, which is low income relative to Kansas and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $53,552 for a family of four.
The people who call Turon home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Turon is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Turon include German, Irish, English, and Scotch-Irish.
The most common language spoken in Turon is English. Some people also speak Spanish.
