Lucas is a tiny town located in the state of Kansas. With a population of 609 people and just one neighborhood, Lucas is the 211st largest community in Kansas. Much of the housing stock in Lucas was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Lucas is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Lucas is a town of managers, service providers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Lucas who work in farm management (15.27%), office and administrative support jobs (12.73%), and healthcare support services (7.27%).
Another important characteristic of Lucas is that a lot of people work in agricultural jobs, especially compared to most other communities in America, and there are quite a number of farms in town.
A relatively large number of people in Lucas telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 13.28% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Lucas is a major retirement destination. In fact, people 65 and over make up 30.87% of the population. For those considering a place to retire, Lucas may be a good choice because much of the town's services and social community are oriented toward the over-65 demographic.
One of the benefits of Lucas is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 14.30 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.
As is often the case in a small town, Lucas doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
In terms of college education, the citizens of Lucas rank slightly lower than the national average. 12.18% of adults 25 and older in Lucas have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree, while 14.96% of adults have a 4-year degree or higher in the average American community.
The per capita income in Lucas in 2000 was $15,992, which is lower middle income relative to Kansas and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $63,968 for a family of four.
The people who call Lucas home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Lucas is White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Lucas include German, Czech, English, Irish, and French.
The most common language spoken in Lucas is English.
