About Gypsum

Gypsum is a very small town located in the state of Kansas. With a population of 1,416 people and two constituent neighborhoods, Gypsum is the 168th largest community in Kansas. Gypsum has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.

When you are in Gypsum, you'll notice that it is more blue-collar than most other communities in America. 38.7% of Gypsum's employed work in blue-collar jobs, while America averages only 24.7% that do. Overall, Gypsum is a town of managers, sales and office workers, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in Gypsum who work in office and administrative support jobs (11.27%), farm management (10.88%), and management occupations (8.07%).

You will also find that a lot of people in Gypsum work in agricultural jobs - much more than in the average community in America. This will be quite apparent if you drive around town, as much of the landscape is dedicated to farms.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 12.94% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

As is often the case in a small town, Gypsum doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Gypsum Information and Demographics

The percentage of adults in Gypsum who are college-educated is close to the national average for all communities of 14.96%: 14.86% of the adults in Gypsum have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
