La Crosse is a very small town located in the state of Indiana. With a population of 1,056 people and just one neighborhood, La Crosse is the 328th largest community in Indiana. Much of the housing stock in La Crosse was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
La Crosse is a blue-collar town, with 43.3% of people working in blue-collar occupations, while the average in America is just 24.7%. Overall, La Crosse is a town of sales and office workers, construction workers and builders, and transportation and shipping workers. There are especially a lot of people living in La Crosse who work in office and administrative support jobs (14.00%), sales jobs (8.66%), and farm management (6.45%).
In addition, many people in La Crosse have jobs in agriculture, more so than in most other communities in America. As a result, you will see quite a number of farms around town.
A relatively large number of people in La Crosse telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 7.29% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
In La Crosse, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 30.51 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average.
La Crosse is very much a car-oriented town. This is because the population of La Crosse isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 98.18% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.
Being a small town, La Crosse does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
In La Crosse, just 9.67% of people over 25 hold a college degree, which is very low compared to the rest of the nation, whereas the average among all cities is 14.96%.
The per capita income in La Crosse in 2000 was $18,702, which is upper middle income relative to Indiana, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $74,808 for a family of four.
The people who call La Crosse home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in La Crosse is White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in La Crosse include German, Irish, Polish, English, Dutch, and French.
The most common language spoken in La Crosse is English.
