East Alton is a somewhat small village located in the state of Illinois. With a population of 6,831 people and three constituent neighborhoods, East Alton is the 268th largest community in Illinois.
Unlike some villages where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, East Alton is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, East Alton is a village of sales and office workers, service providers, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in East Alton who work in office and administrative support jobs (16.53%), sales jobs (14.49%), and food service (7.14%).
East Alton is very much a car-oriented village. This is because the population of East Alton isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 96.55% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.
As is often the case in a small village, East Alton doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The citizens of East Alton have a very low rate of college education: just 7.67% of people over 25 have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree, compared to a national average of 14.96% for all cities.
The per capita income in East Alton in 2000 was $15,572, which is low income relative to Illinois, and lower middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $62,288 for a family of four.
