Ashkum is a very small town located in the state of Illinois. With a population of 1,404 people and just one neighborhood, Ashkum is the 564th largest community in Illinois. Ashkum has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Ashkum is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Ashkum is a town of service providers, sales and office workers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Ashkum who work in office and administrative support jobs (11.57%), food service (8.18%), and farm management (7.48%).
Another important characteristic of Ashkum is that a lot of people work in agricultural jobs, especially compared to most other communities in America, and there are quite a number of farms in town.
Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 7.57% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Ashkum is a small town, and as is often the case with smaller towns, the population isn't large or dense enough to support much in the way of a public transportation system. In fact, there are many rural roads around Ashkum, which makes walking or biking to and from work a bit difficult. This makes for a very car-oriented town: 97.06% of residents commute to work by private automobile, and people often drive out of town for work, shopping, and other activities.
Being a small town, Ashkum does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
The percentage of people in Ashkum with college degrees is quite a bit lower than the national average for cities and towns of 14.96%: just 11.82% of people over 25 have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Ashkum in 2000 was $18,997, which is middle income relative to Illinois, and upper middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $75,988 for a family of four.
The people who call Ashkum home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Ashkum is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Ashkum include German, French, Irish, English, Italian, and Scotch-Irish.
The most common language spoken in Ashkum is English.
