Urbana is a very small city located in the state of Iowa. With a population of 1,013 people and just one neighborhood, Urbana is the 302nd largest community in Iowa. Urbana has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic cities in the country.
Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Urbana is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 39.5% of the Urbana workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 24.7%. Overall, Urbana is a city of sales and office workers, production and manufacturing workers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Urbana who work in office and administrative support jobs (16.21%), sales jobs (11.29%), and food service (4.92%).
Also of interest is that Urbana has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
Urbana is very much a car-oriented city. This is because the population of Urbana isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 98.7% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.
Being a small city, Urbana does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
In terms of college education, Urbana is nearly on par with the US average for all cities of 14.96%: 15.69% of adults 25 and older in Urbana have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Urbana in 2000 was $18,005, which is middle income relative to Iowa and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $72,020 for a family of four.
The people who call Urbana home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Urbana is White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Urbana include German, Irish, Norwegian, English, and Italian.
The most common language spoken in Urbana is English.
