Larchwood is a very small town located in the state of Iowa. With a population of 1,713 people and just one neighborhood, Larchwood is the 229th largest community in Iowa. Much of the housing stock in Larchwood was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Larchwood is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Larchwood is a town of sales and office workers, service providers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Larchwood who work in office and administrative support jobs (17.51%), sales jobs (9.12%), and farm management (8.29%).
Another important characteristic of Larchwood is that a lot of people work in agricultural jobs, especially compared to most other communities in America, and there are quite a number of farms in town.
A relatively large number of people in Larchwood telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 12.36% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Because of many things, Larchwood is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Larchwood really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Larchwood perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic night life, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live.
Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Larchwood spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 19.01 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the town are less than they would otherwise be.
As is often the case in a small town, Larchwood doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
In terms of college education, Larchwood is nearly on par with the US average for all cities of 14.96%: 13.98% of adults 25 and older in Larchwood have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
