Colo is a very small town located in the state of Iowa. With a population of 1,514 people and just one neighborhood, Colo is the 248th largest community in Iowa. Colo has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Colo is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Colo is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Colo who work in office and administrative support jobs (18.23%), sales jobs (9.86%), and food service (6.12%).
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 8.30% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Because of many things, Colo is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Colo a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Colo has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Colo's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.
Colo is very much a car-oriented town. This is because the population of Colo isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 96.52% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.
As is often the case in a small town, Colo doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The overall education level of Colo is somewhat higher than in the average US city of 14.96%: 20.44% of adults 25 and older in the town have at least a bachelor's degree.
The per capita income in Colo in 2000 was $19,441, which is upper middle income relative to Iowa and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $77,764 for a family of four.
The people who call Colo home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Colo is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Colo include German, Norwegian, English, Irish, Swedish, and Scotch-Irish.
The most common language spoken in Colo is English.
