About Volcano

Volcano is a very small town located in the state of Hawaii. With a population of 2,807 people and just one neighborhood, Volcano is the 49th largest community in Hawaii.

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Volcano is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Volcano is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Volcano who work in office and administrative support jobs (13.33%), sales jobs (8.13%), and the sciences (7.88%).

And if you like science, one thing you'll find is that Volcano has lots of scientists living in town - whether they be life scientists, physical scientists (like astronomers), or social scientists (like geographers!). So, if you're scientific-minded, you might like it here too.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 14.76% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

One downside of living in Volcano is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In Volcano, the average commute to work is 33.53 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average.

As is often the case in a small town, Volcano doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Volcano Information and Demographics

The overall education level of Volcano citizens is substantially higher than the typical US community, as 29.16% of adults in Volcano have at least a bachelor's degree, and the average American community has 14.96%.

The per capita income in Volcano in 2000 was $17,497, which is middle income relative to Hawaii and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $69,988 for a family of four.

Volcano is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Volcano home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Volcano is White, followed by Hawaiian. Volcano also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 11.29% of the town's residents. Important ancestries of people in Volcano include German, Portuguese, English, Irish, Scottish, and French.

The most common language spoken in Volcano is English. Some people also speak Other Pacific Island languages.
