About Hakalau

Hakalau is a tiny coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Hawaii. With a population of 322 people and just one neighborhood, Hakalau is the 65th largest community in Hawaii.

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Hakalau is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Hakalau is a town of managers, professionals, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Hakalau who work in management occupations (15.38%), farm management (11.83%), and sales jobs (11.83%).

Of important note, Hakalau is also a town of artists. Hakalau has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Hakalau's character.

In addition, many people in Hakalau have jobs in agriculture, more so than in most other communities in America. As a result, you will see quite a number of farms around town.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 19.53% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Hakalau are somewhat historic and bounded by the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.

As is often the case in a small town, Hakalau doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Hakalau Information and Demographics

In terms of college education, Hakalau is substantially better educated than the typical community in the nation, which has 14.96% of the adults holding a bachelor's degree or graduate degree: 26.96% of adults in Hakalau have a college degree.

The per capita income in Hakalau in 2000 was $24,537, which is wealthy relative to Hawaii, and upper middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $98,148 for a family of four.

Hakalau is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Hakalau home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Hakalau is White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Hakalau include German, Portuguese, Hungarian, European, English, Celtic, and Norwegian.

The most common language spoken in Hakalau is English. Some people also speak Japanese.
