Siesta Key is a somewhat small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Florida. With a population of 7,051 people and just one neighborhood, Siesta Key is the 286th largest community in Florida.
Siesta Key is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 94.11% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Siesta Key is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Siesta Key who work in sales jobs (21.37%), management occupations (18.86%), and healthcare (11.99%).
Of important note, Siesta Key is also a town of artists. Siesta Key has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Siesta Key's character.
A relatively large number of people in Siesta Key telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 12.24% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Siesta Key is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town's population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.
Siesta Key is a major retirement destination. In fact, people 65 and over make up 40.15% of the population. For those considering a place to retire, Siesta Key may be a good choice because much of the town's services and social community are oriented toward the over-65 demographic.
The town is also nautical, which means that parts of Siesta Key are somewhat historic and bounded by the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.
Being a small town, Siesta Key does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
If knowledge is power, Siesta Key is a pretty powerful place. 51.63% of the adults in Siesta Key have earned a 4-year college degree, masters degree, MD, law degree, or even PhD. Compare that to the national average of 14.96% for all cities and towns.
The per capita income in Siesta Key in 2000 was $53,290, which is wealthy relative to Florida and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $213,160 for a family of four.
