Siesta Key is a somewhat small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Florida. With a population of 7,051 people and just one neighborhood, Siesta Key is the 286th largest community in Florida.
Siesta Key is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 94.11% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Siesta Key is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Siesta Key who work in sales jobs (21.37%), management occupations (18.86%), and healthcare (11.99%).
Of important note, Siesta Key is also a town of artists. Siesta Key has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Siesta Key's character.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 12.24% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Siesta Key is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town's population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.
A very large number of seniors call Siesta Key home: people 65 and over are 40.15% of the population. Because of the prominence of the retirement community, this is good place for the over-65 crowd to settle, as many of the town's services and social community are geared to this demographic.
One of the nice things about Siesta Key is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
As is often the case in a small town, Siesta Key doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
Do you have a 4-year college degree or graduate degree? If so, you may feel right at home in Siesta Key. 51.63% of adults here have a 4-year degree or graduate degree, whereas the national average for all cities and towns is just 14.96%.
The per capita income in Siesta Key in 2000 was $53,290, which is wealthy relative to Florida and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $213,160 for a family of four.
The people who call Siesta Key home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Siesta Key is White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Siesta Key include German, English, Irish, Italian, Polish, Scottish, Swedish, Scotch-Irish, Russian, and French.
