Boca Grande is a very small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Florida. With a population of 1,545 people and just one neighborhood, Boca Grande is the 431st largest community in Florida.
Boca Grande is neither predominently blue-collar or white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Boca Grande is a town of professionals, managers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Boca Grande who work in management occupations (20.09%), art, media and design (10.27%), and sales jobs (9.82%).
Of important note, Boca Grande is also a town of artists. Boca Grande has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Boca Grande's character.
A relatively large number of people in Boca Grande telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 33.91% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Boca Grande is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town's population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.
A very large number of seniors call Boca Grande home: people 65 and over are 50.10% of the population. Because of the prominence of the retirement community, this is good place for the over-65 crowd to settle, as many of the town's services and social community are geared to this demographic.
One of the nice things about Boca Grande is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Boca Grande spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 10.43 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the town are less than they would otherwise be.
Being a small town, Boca Grande does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
If knowledge is power, Boca Grande is a pretty powerful place. 68.65% of the adults in Boca Grande have earned a 4-year college degree, masters degree, MD, law degree, or even PhD. Compare that to the national average of 14.96% for all cities and towns.
The per capita income in Boca Grande in 2000 was $107,297, which is wealthy relative to Florida and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $429,188 for a family of four. However, Boca Grande contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
