Roxbury is a very small town located in the state of Connecticut. With a population of 2,136 people and two constituent neighborhoods, Roxbury is the 156th largest community in Connecticut.
Unlike some towns, Roxbury isn't mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Roxbury are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Roxbury is a town of professionals, managers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Roxbury who work in management occupations (16.85%), sales jobs (10.48%), and art, media and design (9.19%).
Of important note, Roxbury is also a town of artists. Roxbury has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Roxbury's character.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 11.94% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
In addition, Roxbury is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are educated, wealthy, executives and professionals, who have urbane tastes in books, food, and travel, whether they actually live in a big city, or choose to reside in a small town. In big or medium-sized cities, urban sophisticates tend to frequent art institutions such as opera, symphonies, ballet, live theatre, and museums.
Because of many things, Roxbury is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Roxbury a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Roxbury has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Roxbury's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.
In Roxbury, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 35.07 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average. One bright side is that local public transit is widely used, so it may be an option to avoid the headache of driving in the heavy traffic by leaving the car at home and taking transit.
In Roxbury, a lot of people use the train to get to work every day even though Roxbury is a relatively small town. Those that ride the train are primarily traveling out of town to good jobs in other cities.
Do you have a 4-year college degree or graduate degree? If so, you may feel right at home in Roxbury. 46.65% of adults here have a 4-year degree or graduate degree, whereas the national average for all cities and towns is just 14.96%.
The per capita income in Roxbury in 2000 was $56,769, which is wealthy relative to Connecticut and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $227,076 for a family of four. However, Roxbury contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
The people who call Roxbury home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Roxbury is White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Roxbury include English, Irish, Italian, German, Polish, Scottish, Swedish, Russian, French Canadian, and Dutch.
