About Roxbury

Roxbury is a very small town located in the state of Connecticut. With a population of 2,136 people and two constituent neighborhoods, Roxbury is the 156th largest community in Connecticut.

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Roxbury is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Roxbury is a town of professionals, managers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Roxbury who work in management occupations (16.85%), sales jobs (10.48%), and art, media and design (9.19%).

Of important note, Roxbury is also a town of artists. Roxbury has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Roxbury's character.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 11.94% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

In addition, Roxbury is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness.' But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.

Because of many things, Roxbury is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Roxbury a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Roxbury has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Roxbury's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

In Roxbury, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 35.07 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average. One bright side is that local public transit is widely used, so it may be an option to avoid the headache of driving in the heavy traffic by leaving the car at home and taking transit.

Even though Roxbury is a smaller town, it has many people who hop on public transportation - mostly the train - for their daily commute to work. Typically, these people are commuting to good jobs in the surrounding cities.
