About Bethany

Bethany is a somewhat small town located in the state of Connecticut. With a population of 5,040 people and just one neighborhood, Bethany is the 126th largest community in Connecticut.

Bethany is neither predominently blue-collar or white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Bethany is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Bethany who work in management occupations (15.80%), office and administrative support jobs (11.75%), and healthcare (10.69%).

Of important note, Bethany is also a town of artists. Bethany has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Bethany's character.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 7.47% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

In addition, Bethany is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates." Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness.' But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.

Because of many things, Bethany is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Bethany a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town's good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Bethany has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Bethany's overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

As is often the case in a small town, Bethany doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Bethany Information and Demographics

The per capita income in Bethany in 2000 was $31,403, which is upper middle income relative to Connecticut, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $125,612 for a family of four. However, Bethany contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Bethany home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Bethany is White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Bethany include Italian, English, Irish, German, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, and Swedish.
