Silverton is a tiny town located in the state of Colorado. With a population of 540 people and just one neighborhood, Silverton is the 179th largest community in Colorado. Silverton has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Silverton is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Silverton is a town of professionals, construction workers and builders, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Silverton who work in management occupations (11.04%), office and administrative support jobs (11.04%), and food service (8.77%).
Of important note, Silverton is also a town of artists. Silverton has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Silverton's character.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 11.74% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Silverton is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town's population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.
One of the benefits of Silverton is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 16.39 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.
As is often the case in a small town, Silverton doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The citizens of Silverton are very well educated compared to the average community in the nation: 42.89% of adults in Silverton have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.
The per capita income in Silverton in 2000 was $16,839, which is middle income relative to Colorado and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $67,356 for a family of four.
The people who call Silverton home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Silverton is White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Silverton include German, English, Irish, British, Italian, Polish, Scottish, and French.
The most common language spoken in Silverton is English. Some people also speak Spanish.
