Port Costa is a tiny coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of California. With a population of 152 people and just one neighborhood, Port Costa is the 716th largest community in California. Port Costa has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Unlike some towns , Port Costa isn't mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Port Costa are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Port Costa is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and transportation and shipping workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Port Costa who work in office and administrative support jobs (20.31%), sales jobs (10.94%), and community and social services (10.94%).
Of important note, Port Costa is also a town of artists. Port Costa has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Port Costa's character.
A relatively large number of people in Port Costa telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 21.88% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
One of the nice things about Port Costa is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
One downside of living in Port Costa, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 39.00 minutes every day commuting to work. It is, however, a pedestrian-friendly town. Many of its neighborhoods are dense enough and have amenities close enough together that people find it feasible to get around on foot.
As is often the case in a small town, Port Costa doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
The citizens of Port Costa are slightly less educated than the national average of 14.96% for the average city or town: 12.75% of adults in Port Costa have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Port Costa in 2000 was $40,409, which is wealthy relative to California and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $161,636 for a family of four. However, Port Costa contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
The people who call Port Costa home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Port Costa is White, followed by African-American. Important ancestries of people in Port Costa include Czechoslovakian, Czech, English, Norwegian, Basque, Swiss, Yugoslavian, and German.
The most common language spoken in Port Costa is English. Some people also speak Other Slavic languages.
