Pescadero is a very small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of California. With a population of 2,131 people and just one neighborhood, Pescadero is the 616th largest community in California. Much of the housing stock in Pescadero was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Pescadero is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Pescadero is a town of managers, sales and office workers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Pescadero who work in office and administrative support jobs (13.65%), management occupations (11.24%), and sales jobs (6.69%).
Another important characteristic of Pescadero is that a lot of people work in agricultural jobs, especially compared to most other communities in America, and there are quite a number of farms in town.
A relatively large number of people in Pescadero telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 9.62% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Because of many things, Pescadero is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Pescadero really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Pescadero perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic night life, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live.
One of the nice things about Pescadero is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
One downside of living in Pescadero is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In Pescadero, the average commute to work is 30.21 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average. However, it is a pedestrian-friendly town. Many of Pescadero's neighborhoods are dense enough and have amenities close enough together that people find it feasible to get around on foot.
As is often the case in a small town, Pescadero doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
In terms of college education, Pescadero is substantially better educated than the typical community in the nation, which has 14.96% of the adults holding a bachelor's degree or graduate degree: 24.53% of adults in Pescadero have a college degree.
The per capita income in Pescadero in 2000 was $24,900, which is upper middle income relative to California and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $99,600 for a family of four.
Pescadero is a very ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Pescadero home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Pescadero is White, followed by Asian. Pescadero also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 41.44% of the town's residents. Important ancestries of people in Pescadero include English, German, Italian, Portuguese, Irish, Scotch-Irish, Northern European, and Scottish.
Foreign born people are also an important part of Pescadero's cultural character, accounting for 22.38% of the town's population.
The most common language spoken in Pescadero is English. Some people also speak Spanish.
