Tonto Basin is a tiny town located in the state of Arizona. With a population of 812 people and just one neighborhood, Tonto Basin is the 132nd largest community in Arizona.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Tonto Basin is neither predominently one or the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Tonto Basin is a town of service providers, sales and office workers, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in Tonto Basin who work in sales jobs (14.58%), food service (10.83%), and office and administrative support jobs (8.75%).
Another important characteristic of Tonto Basin is that a lot of people work in agricultural jobs, especially compared to most other communities in America, and there are quite a number of farms in town.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their homes - 10.73% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Tonto Basin is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town's population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.
A very large number of seniors call Tonto Basin home: people 65 and over are 34.11% of the population. Because of the prominence of the retirement community, this is good place for the over-65 crowd to settle, as many of the town's services and social community are geared to this demographic.
In Tonto Basin, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 36.88 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average.
Being a small town, Tonto Basin does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
In terms of college education, Tonto Basin ranks among the least educated cities in the nation, as only 7.17% of people over 25 have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Tonto Basin in 2000 was $15,157, which is middle income relative to Arizona, and lower middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $60,628 for a family of four.
