About Stockton

Stockton is a very small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Alabama. With a population of 1,924 people and just one neighborhood, Stockton is the 234th largest community in Alabama.

Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Stockton is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 47.8% of the Stockton workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 24.7%. Overall, Stockton is a town of construction workers and builders, service providers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Stockton who work in office and administrative support jobs (10.58%), building maintenance and grounds keeping (10.05%), and healthcare (5.82%).

Stockton is an extremely popular vacation destination. A significant portion of the population is seasonal. During the vacation season, the town experiences a large influx of people who take up residence in second homes they own in the area. As the vacation season ends, the population drops again, leaving behind a substantially quieter and smaller town.

One of the nice things about Stockton is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

One downside of living in Stockton is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In Stockton, the average commute to work is 40.99 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average.

Stockton is a small town, and as is often the case with smaller towns, the population isn't large or dense enough to support much in the way of a public transportation system. In fact, there are many rural roads around Stockton, which makes walking or biking to and from work a bit difficult. This makes for a very car-oriented town: 97.75% of residents commute to work by private automobile, and people often drive out of town for work, shopping, and other activities.

Being a small town, Stockton does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

Stockton Information and Demographics

The citizens of Stockton are slightly less educated than the national average of 14.96% for the average city or town: 11.96% of adults in Stockton have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.

The per capita income in Stockton in 2000 was $18,389, which is upper middle income relative to Alabama, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $73,556 for a family of four.

Stockton is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Stockton home come from a variety of different races and ancestries. The most prevalent race in Stockton is African-American, followed by White. Important ancestries of people in Stockton include English and Irish.

The most common language spoken in Stockton is English.
