Coden is a very small coastal town (ie. on the ocean or tidally-influenced rivers) located in the state of Alabama. With a population of 3,103 people and just one neighborhood, Coden is the 197th largest community in Alabama.
Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Coden is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 52.1% of the Coden workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 24.7%. Overall, Coden is a town of sales and office workers, production and manufacturing workers, and farmers, fishers, or foresters. There are especially a lot of people living in Coden who work in office and administrative support jobs (10.58%), sales jobs (9.49%), and food service (6.93%).
One of the nice things about Coden is that is it nautical, meaning that parts of the town are somewhat historic and on the ocean, or touch tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and tidal rivers. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
In Coden, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 34.45 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average.
As is often the case in a small town, Coden doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.
Coden ranks among the bottom of the nation in terms of college education compared to other cities and towns: only 7.48% of people over 25 have a college degree.
The per capita income in Coden in 2000 was $15,413, which is middle income relative to Alabama, and lower middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $61,652 for a family of four.
